Frequently, the world of fashion is inspired by clothes that were initially born for technical purposes, for sports or military service, such as the legendary Burberry’s Trench Coat, however, only few brands moved from producing sports clothing to being a reference point into the world of contemporary fashion, keeping unchanged its most iconic production pieces.
This is certainly the example of Belstaff, founded in Longton, Staffordshire, in 1924 by Eli Belovitch and his son in law Harry Grosberg. Born to produce waterproof jackets, Belstaff immediately distinguished itself by using an innovative material, completely waterproof, yet breathable, the waxed cotton; thanks to their excellent technical qualities, Belstaff jackets immediately became a fundamental accessory for the numerous British motorcycle enthusiasts, who, in the following years, would have been joined by explorers, aviators, soldiers, men and women that would have written this brand’s history, whose logo represents a rising Phoenix.
Over the years, many celebrities have tied their name to Belstaff, among them the British Army officer T.E. Lawrence (known as Lawrence of Arabia), the Argentinian revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, the American aviator Amelia Earhart, the legendary motorcycle racer Sammy Miller, The King of Cool Steve McQueen, until very recent style icons such as Kate Moss and David Beckham.
Today, after 90 years from the birth of this legendary brand, the most iconic garment of the collection is without any doubt the Roadmaster jacket. Made of waxed cotton and modeled on the look of the historical Trialmaster, the Roadmaster has a slimmer fit, closer to the body of the wearer, it has four patch pockets with metal buttons, it closes with two way zippers and a belt that allows the fit to be even slimmer on the waistline. On the neck, we find a buckle to protect against wind, as well as buttons to close cuffs and prevent from air entering through the sleeves. Inside the jacket we find the legendary checked lining, a metal plate indicating the model name and velvet protections both around the neck and the wrists.! ! Even if you are not bikers, the Roadmaster is a really versatile jacket, worn with jeans and leather boots for informal occasions, but also above an elegant made to measure suit, to make your outfit iconic.
